Podgórze Mine in Kowary
Podgórze Mine in Kowary is the largest uranium mine in the Kowary area and the second largest uranium ore mine in Poland. The mine workings were created in the 1950s, and mining continued until 1958.
Discover the history
While visiting the Podgórze Mine, you will learn about the fascinating history of Kowary mining, dating back to the early 12th century, the specifics of miners' work, underground uranium deposit exploitation techniques, and the secret activities of the R-1 Industrial Plants. Our undergrounds are a place where history, science, and curiosities from the past will allow you to penetrate the carefully hidden history of the Polish People's Republic. We reach back to traditions, facts from the past, and stories from our grandparents.
We offer three types of routes:
- Tourist Route - The underground tourist route in the first stage of operation is about 1600 meters long. It can be visited with children - without age restrictions, with dogs and other animals.
- Extreme Route - After visiting the Tourist Route, the group goes to the higher level of the Mine - to adit no. 19 to explore the extreme route. It is a raw, cleaned route that allows you to learn about the specifics of working underground. This form of sightseeing allows our guests to discover the mysterious corners of the Podgórze Mine. Visiting the extreme route requires prior reservation. It is available from the age of 16.
- Diving Route - The Diving Route covers over 20 km of flooded workings of the "Podgórze Mine". Entrance to the diving area is from the level of the tourist route, and this is made possible by an inactive mining shaft 244 m deep - prior reservation is required.
